Ulalena Show

March 2, 2017

While almost everyone is familiar with Maui’s wide variety of luaus, there was also another option for entertainment after dark on Maui. Named the “Best Cultural Production in Maui,” ‘Ulalena was a captivating theatrical performance and cultural experience found nowhere else on earth. Located conveniently at Maui Theatre in Lahaina Town, guests were treated to a stunning performance of Hawaii’s history and legends, including authentic Hawaiian music, dancing, instruments, and more from the beginnings of Hawaiian civilization to the fall of the monarchy. Evenings of unique Hawaiian entertainment with friends or family at ʻUlalena will be missed!

Ulalena dancing

It’s said that there is a wind and rain on Maui that rises at twilight. Blowing between daytime and nighttime and crossing the boundaries of place and time, it is hopeful and cleansing. The Hawaiian name for this wind is ‘Ulalena, and we highly recommend attending this one-of-a-kind Maui theatrical performance to gain a deeper understanding of Hawaii’s legends and history.

Story, Dance, and Music

Exploring the relationship between people, nature, and mythology, ‘Ulalena tells the rich history of the Hawaiian Islands, from the beginnings of Hawaiian civilization through the fall of the Hawaiian monarchy. Guests will be treated to authentic performances like chants, Hawaiian dancing, and live music from over 100 instruments, as well as special effects from the multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art Maui Theatre.

Hawaiian Culture

This award-winning performance highlights some of Maui’s most talented performers and makes for a captivating experience for all members of your group. Characters and legends include Mo’o the Lizard Goddess, Maui the Trickster God, Pele the Goddess of Volcanoes & Fire, Hina, Kamapua’a the Pig God, and Kalo. Enjoy dinner and a show (or just the show) at this colorful cultural experience.

  1. I am so sorry to not be able to take my grandchildren to Ulalena. I have seen it a few times through the years and was Always blown away by the experience and feelings it stirred in me. I hope to see it return to keep the story alive and strong!

  3. So disappointed. This has become a family tradition. Please bring this back and honor Hawaii traditions. I’ve been coming to Maui since 1961 and don’t do flashy touristy fair. I won’t spend my money elsewhere period!

  4. While I agree wholeheartedly there was some spectacular moments in the show. I personally do not believe a show depicting Hawaiian culture needs acrobatics or other European theatrical gimmicks which has absolutely nothing to do with Hawaiian Culture nor is it needed to depict it. I agree there are certain technological effects that can accentuate the experience, like rear screen projections etc. However, Hawaiian Culture in all its magic, mystery and beauty of Hawaii and its people can stand on it own!

  5. We plan to come to Maui in November. Ulalena has been included as part of our trip on several occasions. In November, we will be traveling with a couple that has not seen the show. If you do reopen the show prior to November 15 of this year, please let us know.

    • Bill, I’m sorry to say, but the Ulalena Show has been cancelled for many years. If you want to do it again, I suggest a similar cultural experience. The closest to it would be a Luau in Maui.
